McGuffey 2nd Reader Unit 4: Constructive Thought and Action
Leonardo da Vinci once said: “You will never have a greater or lesser dominion than that over yourself.”
Then he goes on to say that “the height of a man’s success is gauged by his self-mastery;
the depth of his failure by his self-abandonment. …
And this law is the expression of eternal justice.
He who cannot establish dominion over himself will have no dominion over others.”
Solomon in all his wisdom made this meaningful statement:
“He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.”
Proverbs 16:32

An important principle to learn during these lessons is that we can develop the skill for constructive thought and action. The first reading introduces this concept with food and the importance of developing good eating habits. The second reading encourages the reader to show gratitude to God and seek His forgiveness, His friendship, and His assistance in becoming better people. The third reading reminds the reader of the wisdom and greatness of God and encourages him or her to learn all they can about Him.
After completing the activities for Lessons 12-14, complete a Create and Share project: The following ideas may be considered:
- Copy work: Write the following verse of scripture with your best handwriting. “How much better is it to get wisdom than gold!” -Proverbs 16:16
- Show your love for a family member or friend by preparing a healthy meal and sharing it with them.
- Create a page in your physiology textbook that illustrates good food for the body.
- Draw a diagram about the life cycle of a star and put it in your astronomy textbook. Write a short paragraph to describe your illustrations.
