Children should be familiar with all the alphabet letters and their sounds before they begin reading in the McGuffey Readers. Play games with letters. Talk about the sounds they make.  Read often and allow the child's interest to set the pace for learning. Get Ready, Get Set, and Go for the Code provide some fun learning experiences to help children learn the letters and sounds.

The lessons below begin with Explode the Code book 1.  Each lesson below may take several weeks to complete.  Families are encouraged to also enjoy books and stories from other sources as well while children are learning to read.
