Music and Grammar Resources that can be used with McGuffey's Second Reader
Lesson ideas for the McGuffey Second Reader will include activities from the above resources. In addition, there will be worksheets created specifically for the McGuffey 2nd Reader. Teachers and parents are encouraged to be selective and choose the ideas that work best for their children.
Each Unit in the McGuffey 2nd Reader Lessons should include the following:
Teachers and parents may choose how to incorporate the following Language Arts activities each week. They will not be included in the lesson plans so parents and teachers will need to decide how to include them in their weekly routine.

Spelling
- Recitation and dictation practice from the McGuffey Progressive Spelling Book.
- Spelling tests: Pre-test and final test for words at the end of the McGuffey Lessons. If teachers opt to cover more than one McGuffey lesson each week, they are encouraged to create a spelling list using a sampling of words of all the lessons that will be read during the week
- Students should watch for words each week they can add to the Spelling Notebook
- Students may practice writing spelling words with the following activities:
- Divide the words into syllables
- Alphabetize the word list
- Identify parts of speech for the words in the list
- Parents and teachers may select a handwriting program OR
- Copy work may be assigned from the McGuffey Readers, poetry, or scripture
- Students should read the Lesson several times to develop the skill of reading in a conversational tone with appropriate feeling and pauses.
- Memorization of poetry of verses of scripture could be an ongoing activity throughout the school year. Choose a new selection every 1-2 weeks, depending on the length of the selection.
