This unit includes readings to help children consider how to act on the good feelings they have towards others. It is not enough to have the desire to do good, one must act of those desires to find true joy.

- Choose a domestic animal that you want to learn more about. Find at least one reference to read and take notes about the animal. Find an animal shelter to pet store that allows volunteers to come and care for the animals. Write a brief report to summarize what you have learned.
- Consider how you can help those who less fortunate in your area. You may find a homeless shelter, a women's shelter, an orphanage, a refugee center, etc. Find out what their needs are and prepare a service project for your family, friends, or fellow students to work on for that group.
- Write a research essay about Lafayette and how he helped with the revolutionary war. What was his relationship to General George Washington?
LXX: Robbing Birds' Nests
Theme: Kindness to birds. Children who develop tender feelings towards birds and animals become adults who also are tender toward their families and other people. Let this story do its work in the feelings of your students. Reading: Read the story and discuss the questions at the end. Vocabulary: Many of the words on the vocabulary list have a prefix. Look up the following words in a dictionary and on the word etymology website : https://www.etymonline.com/www.etymonline.com/ What effect does the prefix have on the meaning of the word. Turn to Section 2 of your Vocabulary notebook. Read the introductory page about affixes. Then turn to the prefixes page and add the words from this lesson in the proper column. Research Writing: Help the children learn to research a topic and write a short essay. Research writing will be a new skill for your students. Make this project a group project to guide the children through every step. Let birds be the subject of your research. You can narrow it down to a specific type of bird that lives in your area. First look in an encyclopedia and try to identify three topics to write about. See slide show to the right for more instructions. |
