Lesson Plans for the Original McGuffey Readers
The resources below were in the development stage before we discovered the many other tools that have already been created and tested with many educators. They are not complete and have a few typos, but are available for free to anyone why may want to work with them.
The amount of content in each lesson plan varies. Parents and teachers are encouraged to observe the child's learning and pace the lessons appropriately. There is no reason to rush through this material. Enjoy reading many books and stories while working through the McGuffey Readers.
Music with McGuffey: Music is an incredible way to help children remember all types of information. It is dominant in advertising, movies, churches, and other events that we regularly attend. In 1984, Grammar Songs was introduced by Kathy Troxel to help children learn parts of speech and basic rules of grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary. In 2012, a music method for learning spelling was introduced by Fred Cooper in his book, Spelling to Classical Music. The lessons in these books have been correlated with the lessons in Language Arts for the Heart. Look for the Music with McGuffey tab in the drop down menu for the Primers, First Reader and Second Reader to see a schedule for adding music to your McGuffey lesson plans.

This reference will take on a personal touch as students select words to add from their reading lessons in McGuffey as well as other reading materials. Students are encouraged to select words that are challenging to them to reinforce the phonics and spelling rules they need to spell the words correctly.
